Deeply rooted in the wilderness of the Asterousia Mountains, Thalori Farm is the living heart of our vision. After the village of Kapetaniana had fallen into a deep slumber for decades, we created a place in 2012 where ancient traditions come back to life. Located just 500 meters from the village, we combine the protection of rare local breeds with genuine Cretan hospitality. What began as a dream is today a sanctuary where humans, animals, and nature reunite in their original rhythm.
“Animals never lie” – A conversation with Markos, founder of Thalori
Question: Markos, the farm has been active since 2012. What drives you to follow this authentic path in the Asterousia Mountains?
Markos: “For me, living with animals is not a job; it’s a return to my roots. It all started in the village, in my childhood. I remember the time with my grandfather Manolis—I was six when I first sat on a horse, and at eleven, I got my first one. Those early years taught me: animals are the most honest companions. They are sensitive, they are truthful. They know things that we humans have often forgotten.
At Thalori Farm, we live in a circle of giving and taking. We carry the responsibility for these creatures, offering them protection and keeping old breeds alive that had almost vanished. In return, they give us their strength, their milk, and this deep sense of peace. Take the cows, for example: they worked hard for us before cars existed. Today, we give something back to them, ensuring they can simply live here.
I want our visitors to feel this rhythm. Anyone who has a connection to nature and animals becomes a better person in a way. It’s about the freedom to enjoy the quality of traditional food and to learn what it truly feels like to be at one with your surroundings. That is what we teach here every day, and what we learn ourselves over and over again.”
